Deep Design Understanding

Most raters have never modeled a building, and most energy consultants have never crawled an attic with a duct blaster. Olaf does both, which gives him a unique understanding of the entire process.

Due to updated CEC guidance on avoiding potential conflicts of interest, we are no longer able to provide both consulting and testing services on the same job. Our mission is still to make the entire process of energy compliance as smooth and painless as possible for our clients, so even if you are working with a different energy consultant we encourage you to reach out as early as possible for free and independent advice on how to select compliant equipment and make sure there are no ugly surprises on inspection day. You can use the search tools on this page to find compliant range hoods and IAQ fans.

Before ADU Inspection

Ace your ECC inspection in one go with these tips.

  1. 1 Check the label on your mini-split. The make and model, and the rated heating capacity, need to match what is shown on the drawings your design professional prepared.
  2. 2 Check that the IAQ fan and kitchen range hood match what was specified on the plans. If your designer didn't specify a fan and range hood, use the tools below to select ones that comply, or to check whether what you already installed does.
Give the range hood extra attention. This is where most ADUs fail. Show more

The required airflow goes up as the unit gets smaller, because there is less air volume to dilute the pollutants that escape the hood while cooking. A compact ADU therefore faces a tougher requirement than a full-size house, not an easier one. A gas or propane range raises it again: an ADU under 1,000 ft² with a gas cooktop needs 280 CFM at 3.0 sones or quieter, which almost nothing on the market delivers, and no over-range microwave in the entire HVI directory does. An electric or induction cooktop drops the same unit to 160 CFM and opens up hundreds of options. If the range is still up for discussion, this is the cheapest place to solve the problem.

Kitchen range hood Find a hood that meets the local exhaust airflow requirement

Kitchen local exhaust is verified at ECC testing, and picking the wrong hood is an easy way to fail at final.

IAQ / bathroom exhaust fan Find a fan that meets the continuous ventilation rate requirement

In most local ADUs the bathroom exhaust fan doubles as the whole-dwelling IAQ fan, running continuously. A kitchen range hood cannot serve as exhaust-only IAQ ventilation.

Results are for reference only.

Disclaimer

For reference only. This is a snapshot of the HVI Certified Products Directory taken 2 September 2026, covering certified kitchen range hoods and exhaust fans. Listings change, models are added and withdrawn, and ratings are revised. Always confirm the model against the current directory before specifying or purchasing: HVI Certified Products Directory, Section I complete product listing.

Fan efficacy is not checked here. The watts and CFM/W shown come straight from the directory. Your compliance forms give a watts-per-CFM figure that the chosen fan must beat. Multiply it by the fan's CFM rating to get its maximum allowable wattage, then compare.

Range hoods can also comply on capture efficiency (for example 65% CE instead of 160 CFM under 750 ft²). The HVI export does not publish CE ratings, so a hood missing from these results may still comply that way.

A manual on-switch is required on the range hood; automatic sensor-controlled shutoff is permitted. The IAQ fan must not be switched with a light, and occupants must be able to override any automatic control. In-line and remote-mounted fans more than four feet from the grille have no sound requirement, which is why the sound filter disappears when you select that fan type.

Keep the box for the rater. Nothing here is a compliance document, and it does not replace the certificate of compliance for your project.
