Most raters have never modeled a building, and most energy consultants have never crawled an attic with a duct blaster. Olaf does both, which gives him a unique understanding of the entire process.
Due to updated CEC guidance on avoiding potential conflicts of interest, we are no longer able to provide both consulting and testing services on the same job. Our mission is still to make the entire process of energy compliance as smooth and painless as possible for our clients, so even if you are working with a different energy consultant we encourage you to reach out as early as possible for free and independent advice on how to select compliant equipment and make sure there are no ugly surprises on inspection day. You can use the search tools on this page to find compliant range hoods and IAQ fans.

Ace your ECC inspection in one go with these tips.
The required airflow goes up as the unit gets smaller, because there is less air volume to dilute the pollutants that escape the hood while cooking. A compact ADU therefore faces a tougher requirement than a full-size house, not an easier one. A gas or propane range raises it again: an ADU under 1,000 ft² with a gas cooktop needs 280 CFM at 3.0 sones or quieter, which almost nothing on the market delivers, and no over-range microwave in the entire HVI directory does. An electric or induction cooktop drops the same unit to 160 CFM and opens up hundreds of options. If the range is still up for discussion, this is the cheapest place to solve the problem.
Kitchen local exhaust is verified at ECC testing, and picking the wrong hood is an easy way to fail at final.
In most local ADUs the bathroom exhaust fan doubles as the whole-dwelling IAQ fan, running continuously. A kitchen range hood cannot serve as exhaust-only IAQ ventilation.
